My wife has trouble sleeping at night. What are some causes of this?

I've heard reducing caffeine can help.

I agree with both Sidney47 and Zach. Cutting down on coffee will help a lot, but equally finding ways to disconnect from work after having come home to solve the deeper issue of running anxiety. I actually think meditation is the best way to do this - its purpose is to interrupt running thought threads and bring practitioners back to the present, where it's impossible to feel anxiety. She should seriously try it.

Reducing caffeine intake can DEFINITELY help. If your wife just can't get rid of that morning coffee, at least try and convince her to switch to decaf after noon. (But keep in mind that decaf also has trace amounts of caffeine.) If she smokes, it's best if she cuts down on that too, because nicotine can interrupt your sleep rhythms. Exercise can also help, especially more "relaxing" exercises like yoga. Depending on your wife's metabolism, morning or evening exercise can both be helpful. I personally prefer exercise in the evening; after taking a shower, I fall right asleep. But some people are different. They can't fall asleep after exercise, so it might take some experimentation. If all else fails, you might have her look into some herbal remedies. Melatonin pills are a safe and natural way to re-balance your biorhythms. If THAT doesn't work, it might be time for her to check out a sleep specialist.

This is common for people who either have too much stress (anxiety) or too much excitement about work, family or some other event in life. Balance is perhaps one of the most effective treatments for it.
